CSO figures paint stark picture of tillage sector

The figures released by the Central Statistics Office last week provided a stark illustration of the reality that exists for tillage farming in Ireland at the current time and members of the IFA have spent some time studying the gloomy situation since then.

The numbers came as no surprise to them, being already well aware that this sector is enduring a particularly difficult time at present.

The report “further highlights the urgency of the Tillage Survival Scheme put forward by IFA. We raised this again with Taoiseach Simon Harris on a tillage farm in Kilkenny last week.

ICMSA urging farmers to ‘Engage early’ with their bank

Following meetings between the two principal lending institutions in the country in the light of the significant difficulties that the succeeding periods of poor weather brought on through last autumn, winter and now spring, the ICMSA has appealed to members who require banking facilities not to delay in making their requests for loans.

The situation was outlined by the chairman of the Farm Business Committee of the organisation, Pat O’Brien.

“Obviously, weather-related issues  were one of the main topics of discussion at these meetings, but the credit facilities and associated interest rates available to farmers was also raised because we are very conscious that there has to be a pathway for farmers to ‘farm their way out’ of cashflow difficulties and the banks will have to show consideration and support to those farmers when that is required,” he said.
