A newspaper needs two things to rise to the top - quality journalism and quality printing. And at Kerry’s Eye, we have worked hard to ensure that we have both.
Our editorial team packs more content into every weekly issue than any other local newspaper, but it’s the high standards demanded at our state-of-the-art printing facility that helps keep Kerry’s Eye ahead of the rest.
We have invested heavily in an ultra-modern printing system, imported directly from Web Press Corporation in Seattle, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of printing presses.
Largest
Our twin line press produces 30,000 copies of an 72-page tabloid every hour, including up to 40 pages of colour in a single pass.
Located at our headquarters in Ashe Street, Tralee, the Kerry’s Eye printing plant is now the largest Web Leader colour installation anywhere in the world.
The innovative Quad Stack system features next generation printing techniques, which reproduces colour of a much higher quality than conventional printing units.
Indeed, colour quality has become one of the main features in Kerry’s Eye - we run up to 80 pages of colour in every issue.
Our entire production line, from the printing to the bundling of newspapers for delivery to shops around the county, is computer controlled.
Standards
Additional features in the printing plant have introduced new standards to the production line, including a Muller Martini high-speed inserter, and a remote communications system, which enables our professional print team to communicate even as the press is rolling.
But we’ve always led the way at Kerry’s Eye, and keeping up with technological developments in the newspaper industry has helped keep us on top.
We were the first newspaper in Ireland to adopt thermal computer-to-plate technology - which brought a new era of quality control to our printing standards.
And our outstanding printing plant has air supply and temperature control for the benefit of our operatives and to hold newsprint within controls recommended for colour printing.
Producing a quality newspaper like Kerry’s Eye requires a dedication to the highest standards in the industry.
One of the measures of our success is the recognition in the print industry that Kerry’s Eye makes the best possible use of the recent advances in hardware and software to produce the best quality print and picture reproduction.
Technology has revolutionised the way newspapers are produced, and that’s why state-of-the-art technology is installed at every stage of the production process, from our newsroom all the way to the pre-press and printing processes. And as a contract printer, Kerry’s Eye also has to keep up with the latest developments.
Stochastic Screening
Our Stochastic screening process allows us to print outstanding picture quality with level image detail previously unknown in newspaper printing.
Staccato printing utilizes random dot placement and various dot sizes, thus allowing a closer look and feel of the digital or analog photograph. The result is smoother flesh tones, finer details, elimination of moirés, and a much wider color gamut. You have to see it to believe it.
Our modern FTP system means that other newspapers can transmit their files to us for printing almost instantaneously, and with a bank of computers dedicated to file transmission, we can receive files from anywhere in the country 24 hours a day.
The network is constantly polled by our software for files, which are then automatically transmitted to the platesetter for preparation and production in our printroom.
